Information about the North York Moors

The North York Moors is one of England’s most beautiful national parks, a place where one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the country meets a dramatic coastline of cliffs, coves and historic fishing towns.

In late summer, the high moors turn a spectacular shade of purple as the heather comes into flower, creating one of the finest natural sights in Britain. Between the moorland tops lie sheltered green dales dotted with farms and stone villages such as Hutton-le-Hole, with its popular Ryedale Folk Museum, and the lovely villages of Farndale and Rosedale.

The coastline is equally impressive. Whitby, with its clifftop abbey, links to Captain Cook and its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is one of the most atmospheric towns in the north of England. Robin Hood’s Bay, with its steep streets tumbling down to the sea, and the fishing village of Staithes are both full of character. The Cleveland Way national trail follows the coast and the edge of the moors, offering superb walking.

Inland, the market town of Helmsley makes an excellent base, with the magnificent ruins of Rievaulx Abbey close by. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, one of the most popular heritage railways in the country, runs steam trains through the heart of the park between Pickering and Whitby, calling at Goathland, which many visitors will recognise from television and film.

The North York Moors is also a designated International Dark Sky Reserve, making it a wonderful place for stargazing. Whether you are looking for a coastal break, a walking holiday or a peaceful rural retreat, there is a perfect place to stay here.
