Information about Derbyshire

Derbyshire is one of England’s most rewarding counties to visit, a place where dramatic landscapes, historic market towns and some of the country’s finest country houses sit within easy reach of each other, yet the county never feels crowded or overrun.

The Peak District National Park dominates much of the county and is the star attraction, drawing walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts in their millions each year. The northern Dark Peak is a landscape of vast moorland plateaus and gritstone edges, wild and elemental in all weathers, while the southern White Peak offers a gentler but equally beautiful landscape of limestone dales, crystal clear rivers and dry stone walls threading between ancient villages. Dovedale, Lathkill Dale and the Manifold Valley are among the most beautiful of these dales and well worth exploring at any time of year.

Beyond the national park, Derbyshire has much to offer. Chatsworth House, one of the grandest country houses in England, sits magnificently in the Derwent Valley and draws visitors from around the world. Haddon Hall, nearby, is one of the best preserved medieval manor houses in the country.

The county’s towns each have their own distinct character. Bakewell, famous for its pudding and its busy market, is one of the most visited small towns in the Peak District. Matlock and Matlock Bath sit dramatically in the Derwent Gorge, while Buxton, with its Georgian architecture and opera house, is one of the most elegant spa towns in the north of England.

Whether you are looking for an active break in the Peak District, a heritage escape or simply a peaceful retreat in beautiful countryside, Derbyshire is a county that consistently delivers.
