Buckinghamshire is a county of two distinct halves, each rewarding in its own way, stretching from the outer reaches of London’s commuter belt in the south to the market towns and open countryside of the north, with the Chiltern Hills providing a magnificent green spine running through the heart of it all.
The Chilterns are the defining landscape of Buckinghamshire, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of beech woodland, chalk downland, hidden valleys and flint built villages that feels remarkably unspoilt given its proximity to London. The beech woods in particular are among the finest in England, spectacular in every season but perhaps most breathtaking in autumn when the canopy turns every shade of copper and gold. The Ridgeway, one of England’s oldest trackways, follows the chalk ridge and offers superb walking with wide views across the surrounding countryside.
The Thames forms the southern boundary of the county, passing through some of its most picturesque towns and villages. Marlow, with its elegant suspension bridge, riverside setting and excellent restaurants, is one of the most attractive towns in the south of England. Cookham and Bourne End sit nearby in an equally rewarding stretch of river that rewards leisurely exploration by foot or by boat.
To the north, beyond the Chilterns, the county opens into a gentler and less visited landscape of market towns and villages. Aylesbury, the county town, is a busy and practical centre, while Buckingham and Olney in the far north have a quiet and unhurried character that feels a world away from the commuter villages of the south.
Whether you are looking for a woodland retreat in the Chilterns, a riverside stay on the Thames or a peaceful break in the quieter north of the county, Buckinghamshire is a greener and more varied destination than its Home Counties reputation might suggest.
