Nottinghamshire is a county with a famous name and a story that stretches well beyond its most celebrated legend. Robin Hood may have put Nottingham on the map, but the county has a depth of history, landscape and character that makes it a genuinely rewarding destination in its own right.
Outside of Nottingham and the former mining towns of the west, the county opens into a landscape of gentle farmland, ancient estates and remnants of the great Sherwood Forest that once covered much of the county. Sherwood Forest itself, though much reduced from its medieval extent, still contains some of the oldest and most characterful oak trees in England, including the famous Major Oak, and remains a wonderful place to walk and explore. The Dukeries, named after the grand estates of the English nobility that once dominated this corner of the county, is a fascinating and little known area well worth exploring.
Nottingham itself is a confident and vibrant city with a great deal to offer visitors. Its castle, dramatically sited on a sandstone outcrop above the city, tells a story that goes far beyond Robin Hood, and the network of caves carved into the rock beneath the streets is one of the most unusual visitor attractions in the country. The city has a thriving independent food scene, excellent shopping and a lively arts and culture offer.
Beyond the city, the market town of Newark-on-Trent has a handsome historic centre and a castle with significant Civil War connections, while Southwell is home to one of England’s most beautiful and least visited minsters, well worth a detour for anyone with an interest in medieval architecture.
