Information about North East England
The North East of England is one of the country’s most dramatic and rewarding regions to visit, encompassing the counties of County Durham, Northumberland, and Tyne and Wear, along with the ceremonial county of Cleveland.
The landscape sets the North East apart. Northumberland in particular is one of England’s least populated and most breathtaking counties, with vast open moorland, ancient castles perched on windswept headlands, and some of the finest and least crowded beaches in the entire country. The region’s coastline stretches for miles, rugged and largely unspoilt, while inland the Northumberland National Park offers some of the darkest skies in Europe — a magnet for stargazers.
History is everywhere here. Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Romans nearly two thousand years ago, cuts across the region from coast to coast and remains one of England’s most awe-inspiring ancient monuments. Medieval castles, priories and abbeys dot the landscape, telling the story of a borderland that was fought over for centuries.
The cities offer a very different but equally compelling reason to visit. Newcastle upon Tyne is famous for its warmth, its food scene and its remarkable regenerated quayside. Durham, with its magnificent cathedral and castle overlooking the River Wear, is one of the most beautiful city settings in England.
Whether you’re drawn by wild landscapes, ancient history or vibrant city life, the North East has far more to offer than many visitors expect.
