Information about East Midlands
The East Midlands is a region that rewards those who take the time to explore it, encompassing the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland — England’s smallest county, yet one with a great deal of charm.
The landscape is more varied than many visitors expect. The Peak District, much of which falls within Derbyshire, is one of England’s most visited and best loved national parks, with dramatic moorland, limestone dales, rivers and reservoirs drawing walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. To the east, Lincolnshire opens out into wide fenlands and a coastline of long sandy beaches and traditional seaside resorts that remain refreshingly unhurried.
History runs deep across the region. Nottingham is famous the world over for its association with Robin Hood, but also offers a rich real history of its own, with a dramatic castle and a network of caves carved into the sandstone beneath the city. Lincoln is dominated by its magnificent cathedral, one of the finest in England, visible for miles across the flat Lincolnshire landscape. Stamford, Burford and Uppingham are among the most handsome market towns in the country.
The East Midlands also has strong connections to some of England’s most celebrated literary and historical figures, and its country houses, gardens and estates are among the least crowded and most rewarding to visit.
Whether you are looking for adventure in the Peak District, a peaceful retreat in rural Lincolnshire or Rutland, or a city break with history and culture, the East Midlands has plenty to offer every kind of visitor.
