Information about North West England

The North West of England is one of the country’s most varied and visited regions, encompassing the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, and the metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

The landscape ranges from the sublime to the urban. Cumbria is home to the Lake District, England’s largest national park and arguably its most beautiful, with soaring fells, mirror-still lakes and charming market towns that draw visitors from around the world. Lancashire offers its own quieter pleasures, with the Forest of Bowland — an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — providing wonderful walking country that remains largely undiscovered by the crowds.

The coastline stretches along Morecambe Bay and down through Lancashire to the Wirral Peninsula, offering wide sandy beaches, nature reserves and some classic British seaside towns.

The North West also has two of England’s most vibrant and culturally rich cities. Manchester is a world-class destination for culture, architecture, music and food, while Liverpool’s waterfront, museums and extraordinary musical heritage make it one of the most distinctive cities in Europe.

Away from the cities, the region rewards those who take their time — historic market towns, medieval churches, country house hotels and some of England’s finest walking and cycling routes are all within easy reach.

Whether you are drawn by the grandeur of the Lake District, the energy of its cities or the quiet pleasures of its countryside, the North West offers an exceptional range of places to stay and things to do.
