Information about South East England

The South East of England is the country’s most visited region after London, and with good reason. Encompassing the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West Sussex, it offers an exceptional variety of landscapes, history and places to stay within easy reach of the capital.

The coastline alone is reason enough to visit. From the iconic white cliffs of Dover and the wide shingle beaches of Sussex to the sheltered bays and sailing waters of Hampshire and the distinct pleasures of the Isle of Wight, the South East has one of England’s most varied and rewarding shorelines.

Inland, the region is far greener and more rural than its proximity to London might suggest. The North and South Downs sweep across the landscape as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering wonderful walking and cycling country, while the New Forest in Hampshire is one of England’s most ancient and atmospheric landscapes, roamed by wild ponies and rich in wildlife.

The South East is extraordinarily rich in history. Canterbury, with its magnificent cathedral, has drawn visitors for centuries. Oxford is one of the world’s most beautiful and celebrated university cities. Windsor, Chichester, Winchester and Rye each offer their own distinct character and heritage.

Whether you are looking for a seaside break on the Sussex coast, a countryside retreat in the Chilterns or the North Downs, a sailing holiday on the Solent or a city break in Oxford or Brighton, the South East offers one of the widest ranges of places to stay in England.
