Information about Northumberland
Northumberland is England’s most northerly county and, by almost any measure, one of its most spectacular. Sparsely populated, largely unspoilt and possessed of a wild, elemental beauty that is unlike anywhere else in the country, it is a county that leaves a profound impression on almost every visitor who ventures this far north.
The coastline alone is worth the journey. Stretching from the mouth of the Tyne to the Scottish border, it takes in some of the finest and least crowded beaches in the British Isles — long sweeps of golden sand backed by dunes, punctuated by dramatic castles rising from rocky outcrops above the sea. Bamburgh Castle, sitting on its basalt crag above one of the most beautiful beaches in England, is one of the great iconic sights of the north. Nearby, the tidal island of Lindisfarne — Holy Island — with its ruined priory and castle, is one of the most atmospheric and historically significant places in the entire country.
Inland, the Northumberland National Park covers a vast swathe of moorland, ancient forest and river valley that is among the emptiest and most tranquil landscapes in England. The Cheviot Hills roll towards the Scottish border in a landscape that has changed little since the days when this was contested borderland, fought over for centuries. Hadrian’s Wall, running through the southern part of the national park, follows some of its most dramatic sections here, with forts, museums and walking trails bringing two thousand years of history vividly to life.
Alnwick, with its magnificent castle and the celebrated Alnwick Garden, is the most visited of the county’s market towns and makes an excellent base for exploring the coast and countryside. Hexham, in the south of the county, has a fine abbey and a busy market that has served the surrounding farming community for centuries.
Whether you are looking for a remote coastal cottage, a walking holiday in the national park, a journey along Hadrian’s Wall or simply the rare pleasure of a beach with no one else on it, Northumberland is a county that sets its own terms and exceeds every expectation.
