Information about Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire is a county that has quietly got on with being one of the most prosperous and pleasant places to live in England, without ever making too much fuss about it. Sandwiched between London to the south and the more celebrated counties of Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire to the north and west, it is perhaps the most underrated green county in the south east of England.
The landscape is gentle and deeply English — a rolling countryside of river valleys, ancient woodland and wide arable fields punctuated by some of the most attractive market towns and villages in the home counties. The Chess, Lea and Ver valleys are particularly rewarding for walking and cycling, threading through a countryside that feels genuinely rural despite the county’s proximity to the capital. Much of the landscape falls within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which extends into the west of the county bringing beech woodland, chalk downland and wide views across the surrounding countryside.
Hertfordshire has a surprisingly rich history. Verulamium, the Roman city that preceded St Albans, was one of the most important Roman settlements in Britain, and the remains visible in the park today along with the exceptional museum make St Albans one of the most rewarding historic cities in the south east. The cathedral, built partly from recycled Roman brick, is one of the longest in England and well worth a visit.
Beyond St Albans, the county has a scattering of attractive towns each with their own character. Hertford, the county town, sits quietly at the confluence of four rivers. Hitchin has a fine market place and a strong independent spirit, while Berkhamsted and Tring offer easy access to the Chilterns and a relaxed and prosperous town life.
Whether you are looking for a peaceful rural retreat within easy reach of London, a heritage break in St Albans or a walking holiday in the Chilterns, Hertfordshire offers a gentler and greener England that is well worth taking the time to discover.
