Cambridgeshire is a county of two very distinct characters, and both reward the visitor in different ways. The fens are an acquired taste but a deeply rewarding one. Drained over centuries from waterlogged marshland into some of the most fertile agricultural land in the country, this is a landscape of long straight drains, wide horizons and extraordinary light that has inspired artists and writers for generations. Ely, rising from the flat fenland on its island of higher ground, is dominated by one of the most spectacular cathedrals in England, its octagonal lantern tower visible for miles across the surrounding countryside.
Cambridge itself needs little introduction. The university colleges, the Backs, the River Cam and the tradition of punting have made it one of England’s most visited and most photographed cities, yet it retains an everyday vitality and a remarkable concentration of world class museums, galleries and architecture that rewards repeat visits. Few English cities are as pleasant simply to walk around.
Beyond Cambridge and Ely, the county has a scattering of attractive market towns. Huntingdon and St Ives sit pleasantly on the Great Ouse, while Stamford, just over the border into Lincolnshire, is close enough to make a natural extension to any visit to the south of the county.
