The North York Moors National Park, to the east, is a landscape of equally compelling character — vast sweeps of heather moorland, hidden wooded valleys known locally as becks and gills, ancient abbeys and a coastline of extraordinary drama. Whitby, with its ruined abbey, its harbour and its enduring associations with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is one of the most atmospheric and visited towns on the entire English coast. Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes are among the most perfectly preserved fishing villages in the north east.
York, at the heart of the county, is one of England’s greatest historic cities, its medieval walls, Viking heritage, magnificent Minster and labyrinthine streets of the Shambles combining to create a destination of world class appeal. Harrogate, with its spa heritage, elegant Victorian architecture and excellent independent shops and restaurants, offers a very different but equally rewarding experience.
